.
Now that the month has begun,
It is the month of the woman.
What are your dance skills like?
How do you move
I’m going, to be honest with you today.
Yesterday I was glued to the screen; if you are Nigerian, you will understand
A thought came to me, and I checked my body.
It dawned on me that I was tense and tightening my grip and squeezing my eyebrows.
The emotions I was holding were overwhelming
Without even being aware of it.
After shaking my hands just a little bit, I felt much better.
My next step was to take it a step further.
After shaking my hands and putting one foot forward, I decided to do a weird little dance
It felt so good I couldn’t believe it.
These trapped emotions and energy were looking for a way out
Then I got up and danced without any music
The only thing I was doing was moving my body in a way that felt good to me
You know these are the moments that matter
This is the moment you need to remember
Self-care moments like these
What your body needs most from you
You see, instead of finding some food to soothe the stress and emotions,
I moved
I simply changed the position of my body
.I didn’t do anything I didn’t enjoy
We have gotten so used to holding emotions
When we go through stress, we numb it down with food, screen time, wine, or sleep.
We don’t let emotions move through
We don’t let it out
That is why we would dedicate this month to dancing.
Break out into a dance when you feel down
A slight tap here and there
A full dance when you are able too
Movement is so much more than just a physical activity
It is not just a coping strategy
It is therapy
Trying out a new thing can be daunting
It takes effort
It takes intentionality
Vulnerability
The risk of getting lost
Or to be uncool
But eventually
This new trick will feel like home
It will feel safe
Fun and satisfying
That’s where we will find ourselves today
Dancing and moving our bodies in a way that feels good
And no, we are not burning calories today; we are simply being
Occupying our cool space in the world
When you are ready
Reach out to me to heal your relationship with your body and food
Also, life is too short to dance alone
I am always here
